North Carolina Captive Wild Animal Bill

But...but...domesticated ferrets are domesticated!

This bill seems to be dead! - it was a concern in 1996

Senate Bill 875, short title "Captive Wild Animal Protection," was sponsored by Senator Kerr. This bill was in the North Carolina General Assembly and could have been enacted in July of 1996.

In this bill, domestic ferrets were not placed in the same category as dogs, cats, rabbits, golden hamsters, chinchillas, goats, pigs, horses, captive bred non-poisonous snakes, captive bred parrots, and many others. They were grouped with raccoons and possums, both wild animals, and their legality would have been determined at the county level if the bill had become law.

Please read what Pam Greene's Ferret FAQ says in response to the questions Are ferrets wild? Why are there ferret permits?

For a concise summary of the bill, check out Karen Marsh-Lovvorn's post to the TriFl Discussion List.

Here's the full text of the bill. Please read about this plain text version of the bill!
