TriFL Meetings and Healthy Ferrets
Attending a TriFL meeting with your ferret can be a lot of fun.
Everyone at
the
meetings enjoys watching the fuzzies interact and play. And who doesn't
enjoy
meeting new ferrets? We'd like to ask that everyone take a few
precautions that
will help allow us to continue to have meetings open to
ferrets. TriFL cannot guarantee that all ferrets brought to meetings
will be free of disease.
ECE, or Green Slime
Nobody would knowingly bring an ill ferret to a ferret club meeting. Most
ferrets in our area have not been exposed to ECE. Ferrets who have had
ECE can
recover fully
and become carriers who can pass this disease along to other ferrets.
Kits are especially likely to make a speedy recovery from ECE and become
carriers. Older or weakened ferrets are at a greater risk of an extremely
serious bout of ECE, and these are the ferrets that are at a greater risk
of
actually dying from the disease. If you
suspect your ferret has had ECE at some point, even if they are completely
recovered, please do not bring them to a
meeting. If you have questions about ECE, please check out the links on our medical page.
ADV, or Aleutian Disease Virus
ADV is of critical concern to the ferret community right now. It is an
insidious virus that is contagious; ferrets can apepar healthy and still
be carriers capable of passing the virus along. The good news is that
affordable testing is available. Ferrets visiting TriFL meetings
should be ADV negative. When possible, quick saliva tests will be
on-hand.
For more information on ADV, including ADV testing, please check
out the links on our medical page.
Other Concerns
All ferrets brought to meetings should be healthy and need to have current
vaccinations against canine distemper and rabies. They should also be
non-aggressive, and owners should bring a carrier, food, water, and a
litter pan
with them.
OK, I understand!
Take me to the directions.
